Mabel Edith Price

Mabel Edith Price was born on 2 April 1878 in Wentworth, New South Wales. She was the eldest of seven children born to Charles William Price and Louisa Matilda Gurney. Sadly her father suffered paralysis at about the time when the youngest child was born and he died three years later. Mabel's mother subsequently remarried.

On 24 July 1900, Mabel married Edwin St Kilda Pay at The Junction in Wentworth, NSW. "The Junction" is the place where Australia's two great rivers, the Darling and the Murray, merge. It was where her grandparents, James Price and Rebecca Hayward, who were pioneer settlers in the town, had initially resided. Although her father had died prior to Mabel's marriage, both grandmothers and one grandfather were still living in the town and would probably have been present at the wedding.

Mabel and Edwin were the parents of nine children:

Mabel died on 3 September 1921, more than twenty years before her husband, twenty years before her mother and eight years before her maternal grandmother.

Like her grandfather, james Price, and her father, Charles Price, Mabel left a young family. Her youngest child was just four years old when Mabel died.

MRS. PAY'S DEATH

A Link with Wentworth Pioneers Broken

On Saturday at Wentworth, there passed away, in the person of Mrs. E. St.K. Pay one who can ill be spared from the life of the town. Mrs Pay was Miss Mabel Price, a daughter of Mrs. Wright, Mildura. Mrs. Wright was, prior to her second marriage, Mrs. Charley Price - Charley Price being the son of James Price, a pioneer storekeeper of Wentworth. Mrs. Gurney, another Wentworth pioneer, is the late Mrs. Pay's grandmother. Miss Wright, Mrs. Thomas (Bendigo), Messrs Jack and Syd. Price, of Mildura, also George and ALfred, Mrs. Morrison, Melbourne, are brothers and sisters of Mrs. Pay.

Mrs. Pay was a willing helper at all musical entertainments. She had a good voice, and much dramatic talent. In earlier days she took part in many musical comedies and the like, and was a pleasing performer. Many persons will recollect the staging of "All that Glitters is not Gold" in Wentworth some years ago. Of the cast, Mrs Pay was the last resident in Wentworth. She also took a great interest in, and was a most successful exhibitor at out local SHows, and a generous helper in all public movements.

Mrs Pay leaves a husband and family, a mother, grandmother, and sisters and brothers to mourn their loss.

The funeral on Sunday afternoon was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The hearse was piled high with beautiful wreaths sent by various societies and sympathisers. The Druids Lodge, which was well represented, furnished the pall-bearers. The Rev. J. K. Arnold officiated at the graveside and Messrs. Cowling and George were the undertakers.
