The circumstances of Des' birth were sad. His mother  Aileen Mabel Clifton died on the day and in the place of his birth : 13 August 1936 in Nurse Metcalfe's Private Hospital, Wallsend, New South Wales. For the boy's father, Herbert Cyril Endacott, the joy of a first-born son was mixed with grief for the death of his young wife.

The Clifton and Calnan families (Mabel's mother's family) helped Herb, Mary, Ernest and baby Des in the time that followed. The infant boy and his father lived for some time with his mother's family, the Cliftons, in Cardiff, a suburb of Newcastle. His grandparents played a major role in his upbringing. When his father re-married, young Des remained living with his grandparents, although he sometimes visited his father, stepmother and half-brother. When his father moved with his second wife and son to Ipswich in Queensland, Des remained living with his grandparents in Newcastle.

One of Des's favourite aunts, Gladys May Endacott, Herb's younger sister,  often visited him & his grandmother, Mary.

Des married Margaret Isobel Neal and they had two sons.

Des Endacott died in 1995 in Dungog Hospital, Dungog, NSW.

Sir Desmond Charles

Many years ago, when Matt was around about 3,
His grandfathers family history was handed over to me,
Entrusted for his grandkids, for when they began to grow,
They could learn about their grandpa, that's if they 'wanna know!
Ever thought what your grandpa's grandparents did,
When they lost their daughter,
Yes poor Mabel died quit young, she died before she 'oughta.
They reared her newborn infant, though both their hearts distraught,
Made a darn good job of doin' it, I'm happy to report.
Their name was Mr. & Mrs. Clifton, an interesting family tree.
While his dad was an ENDACOTT from out at Mudgee.
"Named after a horse is what your grandpa told me,
For his mother was a rider, a proficient horse lady,
In fact she was a champion hurdler-won lots of ribbons & such,
She loved her horse Sir Desmond, very very much.
Des was educated at Tech High, a prestigious school at that,
He became a panel beater, not far from where he dwelt.
Was a noted goal-keeper, for Wallsend Soccer Club.
And enjoyed a game of golf, and a visit to the pub.
But in 1970, like many others at the time,
Asian Flu struck Des down, in his actual prime.
His health was n're the same,
Didn't seem far, 'twas such a bloody shame!
Years of illness cut his life short,
But Matt, Alec & Maggie remember one thing please,
your granddad was a real great guy,
Be proud of your ENDACOTT trees.
