Daniel Cleary
The son of Martin Cleary and his wife Mary. From the information in the 1901 census, Daniel was born in approximately 1846.
In the 1901 census, Daniel Cleary's household is recorded as :
- Daniel Cleary, head of family, Roman Catholic, age 54 years, a farmer who could both read and write, and who could speak both Irish and English languages;
- Mary Cleary, his wife, also Roman Catholic, age 40 years, also able both to read and write, and also able to speak both Irish and English languages;.
- Susan Cleary, their 11 year old daughter, described as a "scholar" (meaning she attended school); also able both to read and write, and also able to speak both Irish and English languages;.
- Bridget Cleary, their 7 year old daughter, also described as a "scholar"; and also able both to read and write, and able to speak both Irish and English languages;
- Margret Cleary, their daughter age 4, able to read but not write;
- Ellen Cleary, their daughter age 2;
- John Cleary, their son, age 9 months;
- Martin Cleary, father of Daniel, age 80 years, able both to read and write, and also able to speak both Irish and English languages;.
- Mary Cleary, mother of Daniel, age 75 years, also able both to read and write, and also able to speak both Irish and English languages.
Daniel died prior to the 1911 census. At that time, Mary, age 50, was described as a widow and head of the household. Also present were
- Thomas Cleary, son, age 25
- Mary Cleary, daughter, age 22
- Susan Cleary, daughter, age 20
- Bridget Cleary, daughter, age 17
- Margaret Cleary, daughter, age 14
- Ellie Cleary, daughter, age 12
- John Cleary, son, age 11
- Peter Cleary, son, age 7
- Catherine Cleary, daughter, age 3
- Martin (Daniel's father) age 90; and
- Mary (Daniel's mother), age 88.
Sadly, it seems that Mary was left with young children as well as the adult ones.
Interestingly, the census recorded places of births and the two eldest daughters, Mary and Susan, were recorded as having been born in "America". It therefore appears that Daniel may have emigrated to the United States with is wife and young son sometime between approximately 1886 (birth of Thomas) and 1889 (birth of Mary) and then returned sometime between approximately 1891 (birth of Susan) and 1894 (birth of Bridget).
Any further information about Daniel Cleary or his descendants would be appreciated.
Thanks to Peter F Cleary of Melbourne Australia for assisting with some of the above information.
