Norfolk House, 467 Church Street, North Parramatta

Pauline and Dan's first home was an apartment in an historic building, Norfolk House (c.1831),
which is located at 467 Church St., North Parramatta, near Albert Street, and was at that time owned by Dan's father.

Within a year, they built a home in Bourke Street, North Parramatta, but within a further couple of years, decided to move to a ten-acre (approx 4½ hectares) farmlet in President Road, at Kellyville, fifteen kilometres from Parramatta towards Windsor. While the property was officially described as being at the corner of President and York Roads, the house was built on the hill, with views to the Blue Mountains. The property was named Merrie Hill and became the family home, being sold in 1988 after the children had all moved from home. At that time, as development was encroaching on their property, the views of the Blue Mountains almost completely blocked, Pauline and Dan moved. In 21st century maps, the location of Merrie Hill is now Trinity and Woodside Avenues. The house was located almost at the site of the higher of the two two intersections of these two streets (i.e. closer to where Trinity Avenue meets President Road). Pauline and Dan's last home was in a bushland setting in Fulton Place, Kellyville (backing onto Cattai Creek).

The photograph also shows the north-western aspect of the family home in approximately late 1956.
The tree in the background was on the far side of President Road.

with Fr Leonard Testa in Rome in 1989

Pauline enjoyed overseas travel. In 1974 she went on a two-month world trip with her daughter Margaret. In later years, Pauline enjoyed a number of holidays to England, Italy, Malta and Turkey. The photograph on the right was taken at one of the many basilicas in Rome (possibly St John Outside the Wall). With Pauline is Fr Leonard Testa, who had at one time been the parish priest at Kellyville parish, and who was stationed in Italy at the time of this photograph in October 1989. On this particular holiday, her son Michael joined her for one week in Italy and was the photographer on this occasion.

Following the death of her husband Dan in July 1992, Pauline's own health suffered a little. She managed to live a full life, helping with the care of her mother and enjoying a further overseas holiday.

with daughter, Catherine

In July 1995, Pauline was diagnosed as suffering from mesothelioma (a cancer of the outer lining of the lungs, commonly associated with asbestos-related industries, and more recently with the Salk anti-polio vaccine). In the photograph above, Pauline is seen with her youngest child, Catherine. This photograph was taken soon after Pauline's final illness was diagnosed. She showed a brave face.

Pauline suffered for a year. Mesiothelioma is a particularly aggressive and painful cancer. During her illness, the most difficult thing for Pauline was that she would not live to see her nineteen grandchildren grow and develop their own lives, careers and families. She expressed great sadness at leaving her grandchildren.
