John Phelan

John Phelan was the son of Thomas Phelan but his mother's name is unknown. John was the brother of Mary Ann Phelan.

John was a boot and shoe maker.

Nora Spencer (daughter of Catherine Bergin) recalls being told that John Phelan was "a cripple" who was confined to a wheelchair that he had made for himself. Catherine Bergin regarded her uncle John as a kind man, who took her in after her mother's and grandparents' deaths and with whom she lived until he died when she was about age 13 (approximately 1897 or 1898).

Nora Spencer, formerly lived in Sydney Australia, and she recalled asking her mother, Catherine Bergin, why they never went to see the snow and being told "If you'd seen as much snow as I've seen, you'd never want to see it again either! As her uncle was wheelchair bound, young Catherine had to shovel snow away from the door of the house/shop where she lived with her uncle. In Catherine's memory, the snow was plentiful, heavy and cold.

Catherine Kelly (nee Cleary), grand-daughter of Catherine Bergin has in her possession a rubber stamp passed on through Daniel Cleary. The stamp says "John Phelan BOOTMAKER   Square, Waterford" (impression made by stamp is shown above).
