David Price
David Price was the son of James Price and his wife, Elizabeth, (maiden family name not known). The date of David's birth is not known but he was baptised on 31 January 1803. The family lived in the hamlet of Llwyndu (alternate spelling Lloyndu) which is located one and a half miles north of the town of Abergavenny in Wales. Abergavenny is an ancient trading town with evidence of Roman occupation and it became a major stronghold of Norman occupation in the eleventh century. The church of St Mary, in Monk Street, was formerly the church of a Benedictine priory, built in the eleventh century (hence, no doubt, the name of the street). More information about the town and its history may be found at www.abergavenny.net/history.htm. This site includes some great old photographs which fade into pictures of the same scenes today - see Lower Monk Street. Further desriptions of the historic town may be found at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/Abergavenny/Gaz1868.html and http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyalbum/kenny1a.htm.
The records of the church of St Mary Abergavenny record the marriage of David Price of this parish, bachelor, occupation "cordwainer" (shoemaker). The bride was Margaret Price, also of this parish, spinster (same surname). They were married by banns on 27 November 1830. Witnesses to the marriage were John Philipps and William Williams.
Parish baptismal records show that they were parents of three children :
- James Price, baptised 23 September 1831, son of David and Margaret Price, of Lloyndu, cobbler. Further information about James is provided separately.
- Caroline Price, baptised 16 February 1834, daughter of David and Margaret Price, of Monk Street, shoemaker.
- Sarah Price, baptised 18 June 1836, daughter of David and Margaret Price, of Monk Street, shoemaker.
Thus available records indicate that the family re-located from the nearby hamlet of Lloyndu to Monk Street in Abergavenny in the years between the births of the first two children. The parish records also show that David Price of Monk Street, age 34, died from phthisis (tuberculosis) and was buried on 7 May 1837.
The above information on David Price was researched on commission by genealogist, Mr Sydney Smith, 59 Friar Rd., Orpington, Kent BR5 2BW, e-mail: ss.famhist@virgin.net
Mr Smith is thanked for his thorough research.
