Anne Bergan
Wife of Laurence Murphy. Number of children unknown but included
- Mary Murphy (born approximately 1805)
- Thomas Murphy (born 23 November 1814 in Tinryland, Carlow, Ireland and christened on the day of his birth with sponsors being Patrick Darcy and Mary Bergan. As a subsequent child was also named Thomas, it is presumed this child died in infancy.)
- Jane Murphy (born 6 May 1816 in Tinryland, Carlow, Ireland and christened on day of birth with sponsors Michael Cummins and Eleanor Dobbins), and
- Thomas Murphy (born 26 October 1817 in Tinryland, Carlow, Ireland and christened on the day of his birth with sponsors Jacob* or James* Kegan and Elizabeth Bergan, * male sponsors first name somewhat illegible).
On arrival in New South Wales, both Mary and Jane said they came from County Carlow in Ireland, but no record of Mary's birth was located in Tinryland where records go back beyond her birth year. Therefore it is probable that Laurence and anne were living elsewhere when Mary was born. Possibly they lived in Co. Kilkenny where it is thought Laurence had family, or perhaps they lived in another parish of Carlow but where birth/christening records are less complete.
Looking at the names of the baptismal sponsors for the three children christened in Tinryland, two have the surname Bergan but none are Murphys. One might guess that Carlow was home to the Bergans but perhaps not close to the Murphy family of the children's father.
Nothing else is known of Anne Bergan.
